Mon Bridge (Uttamanusorn Bridge)
Thailand's longest wooden bridge at around 850 metres, linking the Thai side with the Mon village. At dawn, monks receive alms on the bridge — a memorable sight best seen before 6am.
Wat Wang Wiwekaram and the sunken temple
The temple of the revered Luang Pho Uttama, and nearby the old temple submerged by the reservoir, which re-emerges clearly in the dry months of March to May. In high water it is visited by boat.
Three Pagodas Pass
The Thai–Myanmar frontier marked by three small pagodas, about 20 km from town, with a market selling Burmese goods. Check the crossing's current status before travelling.
The Mon village and morning market
Across the bridge, the village market sells Mon food and local products, and women still wear thanaka on their faces — an atmosphere quite unlike anywhere else in Thailand.
Vajiralongkorn Dam
Thailand's largest rock-fill dam, with crest viewpoints and floating raft accommodation. It lies directly on the road to Sangkhla Buri and makes a natural photo stop.
Kroeng Krawia Waterfall
A tiered limestone waterfall beside the Thong Pha Phum–Sangkhla Buri road, requiring no long walk — a welcome stretch-your-legs stop on a long drive.
Drivers who know the mountain road
The last seventy kilometres wind up and down along the reservoir. We use drivers who have run this route before — passenger confidence and safety matter more here than the lowest fare.

Living Mon culture
The Mon village retains its traditional way of life, and the dawn alms-giving on the wooden bridge is a rare sight. Stay overnight so you do not miss the early morning.
Best over two to three days
At around six hours each way, a same-day return is not feasible. Stay one or two nights and keep the van with you, as local public transport is limited.

Frequently asked questions
How long is Bangkok to Sangkhla Buri?
About five and a half to six and a half hours for the 390 km, with the last seventy kilometres of winding mountain road requiring slower driving. Leave Bangkok early to arrive before dark, as that stretch is unlit.
Is a same-day return possible?
No. Twelve to thirteen hours of driving exceeds what one driver can safely manage and leaves no time on the ground. Stay at least one night so you can witness the dawn alms-giving on the Mon Bridge, the trip's highlight.
What is included in ฿8,000?
Fuel, tolls, the driver and bottled water. It is a flat one-way whole-vehicle price. Accommodation, meals, boat trips to the sunken temple and ฿500 per night driver accommodation are separate.
When is the best time to visit?
November to February for the finest weather and morning mist. To see the sunken temple fully exposed, go in the dry months of March to May. In the rainy season the mountain road is slippery and often fogbound, so check conditions first.
Can the van stay with us for the whole trip?
Yes, and we strongly recommend it here, as Sangkhla Buri has little on-demand public transport. Keeping the van and driver lets you reach Three Pagodas Pass, the sunken temple and other sites freely, for ฿500 per night driver accommodation.
