Travel tips for this route

The Phu Thap Boek road is very steep and narrow. Climb only in daylight, in a sound vehicle with a driver used to mountain roads, and never during heavy rain when the surface is slick and visibility poor.
November to January is peak season, when accommodation on Khao Kho and Phu Thap Boek sells out quickly at several times the usual rate. Book rooms and transport at least a month ahead.
Winter temperatures on Phu Thap Boek can fall into single figures. Bring a warm jacket, hat and gloves, especially for pre-dawn mist watching when wind makes it considerably colder.
At 365 km and five to six hours each way, a same-day return is not advisable. Stay at least one night and plan a break in Saraburi or Lopburi for restrooms and food.

Yes, but only with a driver experienced on these mountain roads, as some sections are extremely steep and narrow. We assign a driver who knows the route and will climb only in daylight and safe conditions; in heavy rain the driver may advise against it.

Is a same-day return possible?

We do not recommend it. Eleven to twelve hours of driving before the mountain sections leaves almost no time on the ground and raises safety concerns. Stay at least one night so you can catch the dawn mist, which is the highlight.
