Thao Suranari Monument

The much-revered monument at the heart of Khorat, busy all day with people making and fulfilling vows. Markets and local restaurants surround it, making it a good evening stop.

Phimai Historical Park

Thailand's largest Khmer temple complex, in Phimai district about 60 km from the city, taking one to two hours to explore. The giant banyan at Sai Ngam is close by.

Dan Kwian pottery village

The source of Khorat's distinctive red-brown pottery, on the Khorat–Chok Chai road, with rows of shops selling homeware and souvenirs.

Pak Chong and the vineyards

A district at the foot of Khao Yai filled with cafés, vineyards and sheep farms, pleasantly cool late in the year and the most popular stop en route to Khorat.

Khao Yai National Park

A natural World Heritage site with Haew Suwat waterfall and several viewpoints. Some approach roads are steep, so a sound vehicle and experienced driver matter. Park entry fees are separate.

Khorat's large evening markets, serving the full range of Isan food from som tam to grilled chicken and moo krata, lively from dusk until late — ideal for your arrival dinner.

Travel tips for this route

During Songkran and New Year, both the Mittraphap road and the motorway jam badly from the first afternoon of the holiday. Leaving Bangkok before 6am or travelling overnight can save several hours.
If you want to stop at Khao Yai or Pak Chong, say so at booking — it adds at least two to three hours and a daily charter may suit better than a one-way trip.
Phimai is a further 60 km beyond Khorat city, adding about an hour. Plan it as a two-day trip or a daily charter so you are not rushed.
Khao Yai and Pak Chong are markedly cooler than the city from November to February, so bring warm layers if you plan to stay overnight or watch the early morning views.

How long is Bangkok to Khorat?

About three and a half to four hours using Motorway 6 from Bang Pa-In, noticeably faster than the old Mittraphap road. During Songkran or New Year it can take six to eight hours, so travel early or overnight.

Does ฿8,000 include motorway tolls?

Yes. The ฿8,000 Commuter rate covers fuel, all motorway and expressway tolls, the driver and bottled water. It is a flat one-way whole-vehicle price, not per passenger, with nothing added at the destination.

How far ahead should we book for Songkran?

At least two to four weeks. Vehicles sell out quickly at Songkran and New Year, and it is best to book outbound and return together to secure both legs. The deposit is 50% per trip.

Can we stop at Khao Yai on the way?

Yes, Pak Chong and Khao Yai are directly en route, but allow at least two to three extra hours. For several stops, a daily or twelve-hour charter at ฿7,500 for a Commuter is more flexible and often better value.

Can the van carry a lot of gifts and produce home?

A Commuter takes roughly 8 to 10 large bags with 9 seated. For unusually bulky loads such as several large boxes, tell us at booking and we will advise whether fewer passengers or a second van works better.
